"I'm extremely moved to be here today before these American veterans whose values so clearly reflect my own and those of friends. In my current position, I represent France. But in your past actions, you also embodied France's values and its history. You saved it at a time when it was on a shaky ground, where its destiny was dependent on the guns and bravery of 100,000 men from the United States, England, Canada, France and elsewhere. Soldiers of freedom will left everything behind, risked everything to liberate France and the world from underneath the yoke, to fight barbarism head on and defend a certain idea of humankind."

STORYLINE:
French President Emmanuel Macron presided over a ceremony at the French embassy in Washington on Wednesday, where he presented US veterans with Legion d'Honneur medals and thanked them for their service.
Macron is in Washington on a state visit, the first of Joe Biden's presidency.
