Asking people of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds: SHOULD THE GUY PAY ON THE FIRST DATE?

here's my response:

First off, I think it's a bad question. When I hear, "should the guy pay on the first date?" It makes paying on the first date sound like a CHORE that you're doing out of DUTY, instead of an act of KINDNESS that you're doing out of genuine care for the other person. In other words, this type of question can be rephrased as, "should the guy HAVE to pay?" (spoken grudgingly). When in reality we should be asking ourselves, "Should the guy WANT to pay?" A guy should pay on the first date because they WANT TO, to show this person they're dating that they care about them. It's more about your intention and your willingness to put forth effort, than the act itself. And that's my TEDTalk.
