In this talk from TBS Zermatt, Professor Emily Holmes explains how intrusive memories don’t emerge from “overthinking” — they come from the visual and sensory systems of the brain before your cortex even gets a chance to weigh in.

But, there is good news: there’s now a fast, evidence-based digital intervention that can weaken intrusive flashbacks — not by talking about them for weeks — but by out-competing them with visual-spatial tasks. The key idea is to target the image (not the words) by using visual-spatial tasks to disrupt memory reconsolidating — restoring focus and performance. Yes, it is Tetris and the data is excellent.
