We’re in Sandpoint, Idaho with our friend Corene, and we have just a couple of hours to try to find antique and vintage bargains before I conduct an appraisal fair! She’s giving me a quick tour of some of the many antique shopping options in these picturesque environs.

Our first stop is an estate sale in town, where what’s left on Day 2 is 25% off! The cool 1950s platform glider and American oak mantel surround are too big for my car, but the oil lamp and a really great geometric wooden bar tray from the 1930s are right up our alley. Everything from rock star photos to snowshoes catches our eye, but it’s an MCM Spanish leather carafe that Corene takes with her. If only I’d pulled the trigger on that striking antique bridge lamp…

Next stop is Bizarre Bazaar, a consignment store that’s bigger than it looks and has lots of good vintage for us to enjoy! Corene finds a beautifully painted Cambridge Crown Tuscan shell vase right away, and there’s everything from vases decorated with Chinese elders to costume jewelry to pick from… but it’s the Lladro figure of Pan as a boy that gets my wallet out!

Nearby is Marketplace Antique Mall, a long-time Sandpoint institution with dealers featuring vintage Christmas, a well-priced Metlox Mobile dinnerware set, vibrant MCM glass, and an antique child’s spice set. A cool 1950s Miller Studio chalk wall fish with bubbles and a uranium glass green reamer are must-buys, and we enjoy a wonderfully painted early 1900s Limoges Madonna plaque, a beautiful Van Briggle bowl, and a host of other fun and vibrant things in this tightly packed antique center.

We’re headed to the appraisal fair in neighboring Ponderay, Idaho when we chance upon a roadside flea market, with one very good vintage vendor in the mix! Corene goes to town, picking good and truly old turquoise rings (one for each finger!), while I peruse pocket knives, turquoise Navajo watch bands (and watches to match), and a really good Zenith Transoceanic radio that I wish I had gotten.

Then it’s off to Rusty Trunk, where a crowd has gathered for a fun appraisal fair that you can see by hitting the Idaho playlist! Every space has its own feel here, and there’s a ton of cool stuff to see. I only have a few minutes to run around and check out this fun antique mall, but it doesn’t take me long to find a great deal on a Neil the Frog clock. Many more things catch my attention, from carved camphor chests to massive amethyst geodes to 1920s triptych mirrors, a great MCM Lenox candle pair, and a Tibetan prayer wheel. An art wall, ’70s macrame plant stands, 1890s American oak occasional tables, and a Charley McCarthy ventriloquist dummy are all part of the diverse groupings of vintage delights that I will have to come back and see when there’s more time to shop!
