Hi Guys and Gals here we have the 2016 Trackmaster Flying Scotsman locomotive from the the Thomas and Friends special "The Great Race".

Flying Scotsman is a British locomotive of the A3 class originally built by the LNER, Flying Scotsman is also often called "the most famous steam train the world", I actually had to pleasure of seeing Flying Scotsman when I was a child when it visited Australia for the bicentenial celebrations in 1988.

This Version of Flying Scotsman is a decent looking version of the animated version seen in the special The Great Race, there are a couple of things I dislike the look of and I will let you know why.

The awful steam clouds printed all over the locomotive and tenders are an eyesore and when viewed at a distance look like decals that have peeled away partially revealing glued paper left behind. They are printed on though so it will be an interesting task to remove them without damaging the plastic.

The face is ok but the one eye with it's strange glare is a big put off and would have been better if they had made them match, I don't know why every engine from this special has to have either a half closed eye or a raised eyebrow. Please Mattel these are not lightning Mcqueen please leave the eyes alone! Kachow!

The Buffers are roughly molded and barely there, I know these are for young kids and they get dropped and buffers could get broken etc but I have seen the gradual shrinking of the buffers since 2014 soon there will be no buffers!

OK enough ranting lets get to the good points...

The shape of the body is really well done and as compact as is physically possible while still being able to fit over the drive unit, this translates to a better looking locomotive with better body proportions (This is not a repaint of Gordon).

The way it runs and the pulling power is excellent even on the wrong type of track like I use, with a little shaving down of the activation/locking tab and no weights needing to be added it could easily pull it's own tenders and 2 full size coaches with little wheel slip in spots.

Rarity, I am still to decide if this is a good thing as a collector and owning a couple of them I am happy and feel they are a good investment. But it took me a long time to find them and now I see ebay scalpers and resellers are having a field day charging up to $90 for one of these engines. This is very sad for the intended audience of these trains and that is kids. I have become familiar with the Mattel/Fisher Price cycle of production and it's waves of 3 different engines then they move on to the next 3. Leftovers get repackaged as single engines then are soon gone too. So snap this up if you see it in store as it is only 1 Flying Scotsman per case.


Overall I am happy with it and I have plans for at least one more customs video that will be nearly all TM2 and this engine will be one of them.

I give this engine a score of 9/10 (the ugly clouds hurt the score, it would have been a 10)
