From the award stage to open water: Jack Haines finds out whether the Nimbus 495 Fly lives up to its European Powerboat of the Year title.

When a yard like Nimbus breaks its own size barrier, expectations are high. The 495 Fly is the largest model it’s ever built, and one of the most owner-focused. Jack Haines is in Mallorca with YachtBuyer to get under the skin of this 15m (50ft) flybridge cruiser - inside, outside and out at sea.

Function comes first on the 495 Fly, starting with the asymmetric deck layout that gives safe passage back and forth and better interior space, while thoughtful additions like the stern grill, powered aft window and joystick docking make day-to-day use just that bit easier. Flybridge dining, sunbathing and optional solar panels complete the topside package.

Below, there’s real emphasis on usability: a split galley, flexible fridge space, and three cabins that include a kids’ bunk room or home office. The full-beam owner cabin sits amidships with a private head, and lovely extra details like navigator screens and pop-up TVs add to the boat’s liveaboard capabilities.

Powered by twin Volvo Penta IPS650s (480hp per side), the 495 Fly delivers a top speed of 28 knots (hull 1), cruises best at 22-25 knots at sea, and is supported by Volvo’s Assisted Docking and Garmin surround-view cameras. Ergonomics at the helm are well-executed, and handling is stable and composed. For owner-operators seeking long distance range and refined control in a 50ft flybridge yacht, the 495 Fly is a compelling proposition.
