Bathymetry data, and the knowledge derived from it, play a pivotal role in using and managing the world’s oceans, and is critical for safety of navigation, scientific research, and protecting marine biodiversity. Yet, bathymetry of the Antarctic margin and Southern Ocean is largely unknown or predicted.

For the past decade, Geoscience Australia has been acquiring and compiling bathymetry data from Antarctica, including the shallow coastal waters, continental shelf and slope, and deeper waters of the Southern Ocean and making this information available to researchers, environmental managers and policy-makers to better understand and protect this important part of the world’s oceans.

Jodie completed a BSc (Environmental Science) and PhD at UNSW before joining Geoscience Australia in 2004. Her research has spanned marine and coastal environments across tropical and temperate Australia and Antarctica. She has been in the Antarctic Geoscience team since 2010 and has mapped, sampled, and provided advice to better understand and manage the Antarctic marine environment.
