Arterial disorders represent the most common cause of morbidity and death. Much of this is because of atheroma on the arteries supplying the heart muscle (coronary thrombosis and myocardial infarction) and brain (stroke), although atheroma is also common at other sites.

Peripheral arterial stenosis or arterial occlusive disease is predominantly caused by atherosclerosis and/or thromboembolic disease but may also occur as a result of trauma. Stenosis or occlusion produces symptoms and signs that are related to the organ supplied by the artery.

Intermittent claudication occurs as a result of anaerobic muscle metabolism. Then comes the intermittent claudication pathophysiology. Dr. Sana khan also explains the Chronic arterial stenosis along with acute arterial occlusion. A hand-held Doppler ultrasound probe is very useful in the assessment of occlusive arterial disease.

Digital subtraction percutaneous angiography (DSA) involves injection of a radio-opaque dye into the arterial tree by a percutaneous catheter method (Seldinger technique), usually involving the femoral artery.

Surgical operations are usually reserved for patients with severe symptoms where angioplasty has failed or is not possible. Aortoiliac occlusion responds well to aortofemoral bypass using a Dacron graft, although the operation carries a perioperative mortality and systemic morbidity rates of about 5% and 15%, respectively.
