Rencontre #7. Ed Pien. Entrelacs, filets et esprits des eaux. Série 50/50

Artiste multidisciplinaire basé à Toronto, Ed Pien est d’origine taïwanaise. Il a emmené avec lui au Canada une sensibilité aux mythologiques asiatiques, aux esprits des morts et aux monstres et fantômes du passé. Ses figures hybrides émergent d’entrelacs complexes ; des filets, schémas et constellations de toutes sortes attrapent et retiennent des personnages tantôt symboliques tantôt génériques comme dans Ancient Pine, l’œuvre qui relie les espaces du Centre culturel canadien et de l’Ambassade du Canada en France.

Un élément revient constamment dans la pratique de ce maître de l’entre-deux mondes : l’eau. L’eau de l’encre dans laquelle les figures éminemment fluides se diluent, l’eau précieuse des terres ancestrales pour lesquelles se battent les peuples autochtones, l’eau des parcs et des piscines, et celles qui isolent les îles.

Encounter #7 Ed Pien. Interlacing, Nets, and Spirits of the Waters, 50-50 Series

Ed Pien is a Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist of Taiwanese birth. He has brought with him to Canada a sensitivity to Asian mythologies, the spirits of the dead, and the monsters and ghosts of the past. His hybrid figures emerge from intricate webs; nets, patterns and constellations of all kinds catch and hold characters that are sometimes symbolic and sometimes generic as in "Ancient Pine", the work that links the spaces of the Canadian Cultural Centre and those of the Canadian Embassy in France.

One element constantly recurs in the practice of this master of the in-between worlds: water. The water of ink in which the eminently fluid figures are diluted, the precious water of the ancestral lands for which Indigenous peoples are fighting, the water of parks and pools, and the waters that isolate islands.
