Playtime Live plays the music of Miles Davis

The shapeshifter, the chameleon of jazz - Miles was there during their birth of be-bop playing with Bird in the 40’s. He re-invented big band orchestral jazz with Gil Evans in Birth of the Cool and Sketches of Spain, had a classic quintet with Coltrane, Cannonball and Paul Chambers and made Kind of Blue - still the biggest selling jazz album of all time. Then he had a different classic quintet with Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams which invented the modern jazz rhythm section and played arguably some of the all-time definitive versions of jazz standard ballads on albums like My Funny Valentine before setting off - with basically the same band - on a exploratory journey to invent jazz-fusion through Nefertiti, Miles Smiles, In a Silent Way, Jack Johnson and Bitches Brew. Then he performed some of the greatest electro-jazz of the 80’s with John Scofield, Bob Berg, Marcus Miller and many others. He never ever looked back.

As well as being an iconic trumpet player he spanned some of the most significant musical developments of jazz as an art form: as a composer, bandleader, visionary and spearhead stylistic pioneer who never stopped evolving and was playing with THE best musicians of each chapter... and making some of the most epoch-defining albums of each decade and each evolutionary stage.

In this gig the Playtime quartet will look at music from all stages of Miles’ career ad apply the Playtime touch to some of his classic tunes.
