By 1943, the Battle of the Atlantic reached its decisive turning point.
The once-deadly Atlantic Gap was finally closed as Allied long-range aircraft, escort carriers, and improved convoy defenses hunted German U-boats relentlessly.

The situation worsened for the Kriegsmarine when Portugal granted the Allies access to airbases in the Azores, extending air cover deep into the Atlantic. German wolf packs were now exposed almost everywhere.

Black May, 1943 sealed the outcome. Thirty-four U-boats were sunk in a single month. On May 24, Admiral Karl Dönitz ordered the withdrawal of his submarine fleet. They would return later — but the age of U-boat dominance was over.

Advanced escorts, ASDIC and sonar, long-range patrol aircraft, and new weapons like Hedgehog and Squid had finally broken Germany’s most dangerous naval weapon.

This was the moment the Atlantic was won.
