Young Lalla spends her days with the women in her family, yearning to wear a malafa, just like them. She spots her mother looking beautiful, her sister looking mysterious, and her grandma looking like a queen in their malafas. Lalla helps them with daily tasks, while telling each of them her desires to wear a malafa. Each woman reminds Lalla that she doesn’t know the true meaning of the veiled dress. Once Lalla tells her mother she wants to pray, mother gives her a malafa. Lalla finally understands the malafa’s importance. In this book we learn that in different parts of the world, people wear different clothing. We learn the meaning behind a traditional robe.
