When a letter with a movement on it is followed by the long vowel equivalent of that movement, it must be elongated.
This why the three long vowels are called “Huroof-ul-madd” or letters of elongation.
There are different kinds of elongations (madood) of which we will cover one today called natural madd or madd tabai

The word “madd” means to elongate
“Madd tabai” means natural madd
When a letter with a haraka (damma fatha or kasra) is followed by its long vowel equivalent, that movement should be elongated to two movements
Maftoohah letter followed by an alif
Maksoora letter followed by a yaa
Madmooma letter followed by a waaw
There are other types of madood (elongations) we will cover later.

A sukoon is implied on natural madd letters but not written
More details on sukoon covered later
Whenever the alif, waaw or yaa has no diacritic on it, we spell it with the implied sukoon

There are two ways of writing huroof-al-madd in the Quran
We covered the first in the previous lesson (sagheera letters)
We covered the second in this lesson
