U.S. President Donald Trump spoke at the White House on Friday (December 12) during an Oval Office bill-signing ceremony, where he said U.S. forces would begin land strikes against drug traffickers following what he described as major success intercepting narcotics shipments by sea. Trump said the U.S. is now stopping 96% of drugs entering by water and warned traffickers they are “targets.”

Trump referenced the recent U.S. seizure of the oil tanker Skipper off Venezuela’s coast, the first capture of Venezuelan oil cargo since sanctions were imposed in 2019, as U.S. military operations in the Caribbean expand. The Venezuelan government has denied U.S. accusations of drug trafficking.

During the ceremony, Trump also dismissed newly released photos linking him to Jeffrey Epstein as “no big deal,” said he expects to choose the next Federal Reserve chair within weeks, and argued the White House should have a voice in interest-rate decisions. He also said a proposed U.S.-backed free economic zone in Ukraine-controlled parts of eastern Donbas could work.

The event included Trump signing a bill awarding Congressional Gold Medals to the 1980 U.S. Olympic men’s hockey team.
