In August 2021 our team, comprising of tree climber Kailas Wild, USC x IFAW koala detection dog, Bear, koala carer and rescuer Maria Matthes and our partners at Friends of the Koala, joined forces to provide assistance to a group of koalas that were thought to be unwell in the NSW Northern Rivers region. The team spent three days in the field and found 15 koalas, including a tiny joey.

IFAW-sponsored vet nurse at Friends of the Koala Marley Christian and Maria assessed the koalas from a distance and determined that at least five needed further assessment or treatment but the challenging terrain made it dangerous for these koalas to be captured. The team did manage to rescue one male koala, named Kong, who was suffering from chlamydial cystitis and was taken to Friends of the Koala for further treatment. Removing Kong from this colony temporarily was key for the health of the remaining, healthy koalas in the area and to ensure he gets proper treatment and care.

Bringing together such a skilled and experienced group of people is important for the health and survival of this group of koalas and we, at IFAW, are so proud to have been so involved in this project.
