This weekend, we continue our look back at the 1972-1973 television season with the NBC series Banacek. The show was added to the weekly NBC Mystery Movie 'wheel series' of revolving shows that season. The original NBC Mystery Movie wheel series from the prior season: Columbo, McMillan & Wife and McCloud had done well, and moved over the Sunday nights on NBC to form the Sunday Night Mystery Movie.

Hence, NBC brought along three new series to fill the Wednesday night Mystery lineup: Madigan, starring Richard Widmark, Cool Millions starring James Farentino, and Banacek, starring George Peppard. Of the three, only Banacek would receive a spring renewal to continue on in the fall of 1973.

A fine show with a wonderful opener and theme song, George Peppard found success on a television series after a fine career in feature films that included Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Carpetbaggers, The Blue Max and Pendulum.
