The game takes place in the year 2277, 200 years after the Great War, on the East Coast of the former United States in an area now known as the Capital Wasteland. The region explored consists mainly of Washington, D.C., although it also includes parts of the former states of Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. The player character is a teenager known as the Lone Wanderer who has grown up in Vault 101.
