Control has always rested in the hands of a powerful few. Thinzar Shunlei Yi, a young pro democracy activist who has been speaking up against the military’s human rights abuses and its oppression of minorities in the state for over a decade, tells us why democracy in the state was always fragile, and how the military’s continuing oppression added to it.
