Top down and bottom up are the Strategies which are widely used in various fields like Architecture, Programming a software, Neuroscience, Ecology and also for management and organization

Top down approach starts with entire system and it will be break down into sub-assemblies again into sub systems and again and again till it reaches the elementary part. A bottom-up approach is the piecing together of systems to give rise to more complex systems. Let me brief that by spotting an example of designing a car

In Top Down Approach I will design the body of the car first, engine, wheels etc… up-to the nuts and bolts
In Bottom-up approach I will design my wheels first and the drive shaft to fit that and i will design or choose engine based on the wheels and finally I will come to the body to house all the components
Before Starting the design process I have to decide on which approach am going to design my product. Usually the objective itself will define the type of approach that I have to use in my design for example if I my objective is to increase the RPM of the Wheel or to increase the durability of the wheel I have to start my design from the wheel Which is the bottom-up approach. If my objective is to increase the aerodynamic efficiency of the car or to get more stylish car I have to start my design from body of the car which is the Top Down approach
