The MARIO ARG/Creepypasta Fully Explained

Over the course of a month and more, I have delved head-first into the mystery of the MARIO creepypasta of years yonder. What I didn't expect to find is that this rabbit hole would go down deep for 15+ years, involving several different rom hack copies of Mario World, scattershot internet references and web pages, and so much more.

What I found was a full-blown ARG, and one of the first of its kind - a video game alternate reality game.
