The Creepy Charm of Old Halloween Costumes (1890s–1930s)
Back in the early 1900s, Halloween wasn’t the cute, candy-filled night we know now. It was rooted in old Celtic traditions especially Samhain, a night when the dead were believed to return to the living world.
To protect themselves, people wore masks and disguises to confuse or scare away wandering spirits.
That’s where the idea of costumes began but in early America, those disguises had a raw, handmade eeriness.
Why They Look So Creepy:
There were no costume stores. People used sacks, rags, old curtains, paper mâché, and flour sacks to make masks. The crude, uneven features gave them a haunting, lifeless look.
Early cameras captured harsh shadows and dull tones. Combined with black-and-white film, it made everything look more sinister than it did in real life.
Costumes were intentionally odd, distorted, or ghost-like to ward off evil.
Costumes were meant to blend with ghosts, not charm them.
