Wood Carving - Thor's Hammer - Mjolnir - on the banks of Llyn Brianne reservoir...

Описание к видео Wood Carving - Thor's Hammer - Mjolnir - on the banks of Llyn Brianne reservoir...

In this video, Paul works on a Thor's Hammer (Mjolnir) whilst sitting on the banks of Llyn Brianne reservoir in Carmarthenshire.

Before we arrived, Paul had already cut out the basic shape out of some sustainably-sourced local Sycamore wood on the bandsaw. This design had a captive loop, so Paul had used the drill press to break through and make the first few holes, so that it would be easier to free the loop when out and about.

In order to free the loop, Paul used 4 tools. A small gouge, a modified straight chisel (about 2mm in width), a metal 1mm modified straight chisel and a homemade sharp nosed knife for very fine work. Once the loop was released, Paul used 2 flexcut pelican knives (KN19 Mini and KN18) to clean up the inside of the loops.

Paul then used a flexcut roughing knife (KN14) and the flexcut pelican knife (KN18) to shape the hammer.

Once shaped, Paul then drew a design from the top of the hammer to the bottom, using calipers to ensure that the boxes were of equal height. But he wasn't happy with this, so out came the rubber, and heights got progressively larger as they went down the hammer.

Paul then used flexcut chip carving knife (KN20) to cut out the chips for this design, leaving the centre line intact.

When we got back home, Paul tidied it up and then treated it to several coats of our homemade 'wood butter' (a mix of beeswax and Tung oil) and then gave it a final polish on the Axminster buffing machine.
