Other stark examples include the extended political deadlock in Spain after its recent national elections and the recent referendum on Brexit.

What are the political, economic, and social forces that give rise to episodes of heightened uncertainty about election outcomes and consequences? How do electoral arrangements and other institutions dampen or amplify the underlying sources of anxiety and uncertainty. What are the economic consequences of the uncertainties surrounding elections and other aspects of democratic decision-making?

To explore these and related questions, the University of Chicago's Becker Friedman Institute and Stanford University's Hoover Institution hosts this one-day conference, concluding with a panel of distinguished speakers.
