North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is embracing a sustainable future for regional transport. The first battery-electric trains, Siemens Mireo Smart Plus B units, will begin service on the RE 47 line this summer 2026, replacing diesel trains. These state-of-the-art trains, developed by Siemens Mobility and leased through Smart Train Lease, are a key step in reducing emissions. The trains will run on the RE 47 route, connecting Remscheid-Lennep and Düsseldorf Central Station. They'll feature advanced technology, including WiFi, USB ports, and bicycle storage, offering a comfortable passenger experience. Crucially, these battery-electric multiple units (BEMUs) can operate on existing overhead wires or switch to battery power in non-electrified sections, a vital factor for the RE 47 line, which includes Germany's highest railway bridge. This innovative approach to regional rail will enhance reliability and modernize services, particularly on the challenging RE 47 line, following previous disruptions. The project is supported by the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR), and Regiobahn, emphasizing the regional commitment to sustainable mobility solutions.
