CSX's Keystone Subdivision, running between Cumberland, MD and McKeesport, PA, traverses some of the most stunning scenery in Western PA. The line crosses the Allegheny mountains at Sandpatch and the area around this section of the line is more commonly referred to as the Sandpatch Grade. I paid a visit to two locations on the east slope of the Sandpatch grade on July 27, 2012. The locations visited included an overlook located at Foley, PA, called 'FO' by the railroad. At one time, a third track and a tower were found here, but have all since disappeared. The second location visited was a small village named Glencoe. Here, trains wind around a curve at a small crossing as they follow Wills Creek up the grade toward Mance, Manilla and the summit at Sandpatch. Traffic was heavy, with lulls of sometimes two hours. This day in particular was a rather good day to visit. CSX was doing some track work around the interlocking at Foley and every train that passed had to call the foreman in charge to receive permission through the work area, so I was able to identify accurate symbols and get set for a shot with ample time to spare. I was rather surprised at the very few GEVOs that I had seen this day, with the predominant power being EMDs and former Conrail units.
