Gerda Gottlieb Wegener (1886-1940) was a successful but controversial Danish Art Déco painter.
Her art was dominated by sensuality and eroticism. She married fellow artist Einar Wegener and the copule were famous for both their art and turbulant life style. Her husband called himself Lili Elbe and had a sex change operation in 1930. He died in 1931.
Gerda Wegener´s paintings were considered out of fashion by the time she died, but today her extreme Art Déco is again highly appreciated.
