How to keep dog off couch

Please no judgement! We purchased a brand new couch and wanted to make sure our dog stayed off of it. When we were home, he never tried to get up there because he fully knows it is not allowed. Obviously he snuck around the traps at first... but after getting clipped a few times he no longer gets up there! No animal cruelty here! This is one tough doggie... a little snip from a mouse trap would not hurt him much. And this is much less punishment than he would endure in a pack if he disobeyed. In fact, we have gotten snapped with the traps MANY more times than he has! On purpose and on accident...
And BTW we tried tin foil first... it did NOT work! The jerk just laid on it!
