In this video, we’re going to talk about what to do if you have a lump in your throat.
If you’ve ever felt like you had a lump in your throat, but there’s nothing in there, I’m going to give you some tips you can try.
First, let’s talk about the structure of the throat. At the back of your throat, you have your pharynx. Right below it, you have your larynx. Just below that is the trachea. Behind the trachea, you have your esophagus.
Within the structure of your throat, you have a little flap. This controls the food, so it doesn’t go down the wrong pipe and into your lungs.
All of these pieces are made up of nerves, muscles, tendons, and cartilage.
A lot of the time, the sensation of a lump in your throat is actually stress. When you go through stress, you activate and tense up all of the tissues in your throat.
A lump in your throat can also be caused by a virus, low vitamin D, GERD, and problems with the vagus nerve.
A spasm in the soft tissue of the throat can also cause a lump sensation. The top cause of this is hypocalcemia—or low calcium. Taking calcium may help this situation. Increasing your levels of vitamin D may also help.
