As horses age their ability to break down their food gets harder and harder. This causes them to start losing weight because they aren’t getting the nutrition from the food that they need to be healthy.

First and foremost, blood work and dentals is ALWAYS key. Dentals should be done yearly to keep your horses teeth in tip top shape to break the food down. Blood work is important to know systemically if your horse is missing something or if they might have an underlining condition which could be causing the weight loss, also.

We use this recipe below to help our older horses not just gain weight, but maintain their weight also:

⚡️⚡️Our ‘Senior Bucket’ Recipe⚡️⚡️
Get a 10 pound bucket - 20 pound if you are going to soak the feed to make it into a mash.

Add 9 pounds of either Stable Mix, Alfalfa pellets or Timothy Pellets.

If you are using Stable Mix don’t worry about the beat pulp listed below.

1 scoop weight gainer - we find that Horse Guard works the best.

1 scoop of elctrolytes

1 pump of red cell

Then top with 1 pound of LMF Senior Feed to lock the ‘must haves’ in between the pellets and the senior feed. That way they are more likely to consume everything and not miss a bite!

Feed this two times a day.

Depending on how that works, adding a small ‘lunch’ of soaked alfalfa pellets with a little senior and red bran makes a great ‘extra’ benefit if they aren’t gaining or maintaining on this recipe 2x a day.
