1. There was (wasn't) / were (weren't) for talking things in the past; lots of, some, any
• There was a sculpture of an elephant in our town thirty years ago.
• There wasn't a school in our village fifty years ago.
• There weren't any planes two hundred years ago.
• There were lots of birds then.
• There were some old books in the classroom.

We use lots of or some with 'There were'.
We use any with 'There weren't'.
