The role of female composers in the Baroque period has recently come into focus, with audiences and musicians increasingly becoming aware of the astonishing contributions that women made to the era. Referred to as ‘the marvel’ (‘le merveille de Notre siecle’ in Mercure galant in December 1678), Elizabeth Jacquet de la Guerre’s inventiveness as a composer was recognised and honoured in her lifetime, and we know that she proactively built on her career successes in a way that was unusual for women of the time.
