This time, I walked across Setagaya Ward—3.5 hours covering Tokyo's most populous ward from Todoroki in the afternoon to Kyodo in the evening.
SETAGAYA: TOKYO'S LARGEST RESIDENTIAL WARD
Setagaya Ward has over 900,000 residents, making it Tokyo's most populous ward. It's known as an upscale residential area, though the reality is more mixed—some neighborhoods are expensive (Fukasawa, parts near Denenchofu), others are standard Tokyo residential (around smaller stations), and the whole ward is primarily houses and apartments rather than commercial districts.
The walk starts at Todoroki Station in the southern part of Setagaya and moves north through various neighborhoods, ending at Kyodo in the evening. This covers a significant portion of the ward's geography over 3.5 hours.
FUKASAWA
Fukasawa is a residential neighborhood known for larger properties and higher-end housing. The streets are wider here, houses are bigger, and there's more greenery than average Tokyo residential areas. Fukasawa Forest is a preserved wooded area maintained as public green space.
SAKURASHINMACHI & SETAGAYA STATION
Sakurashinmachi is a residential area along the Denentoshi Line. The neighborhood around the station has shops and restaurants serving residents, but it's primarily a commuter station where people live and travel to central Tokyo for work.
Setagaya Station is on the Setagaya Line, a small two-car tram that runs through the ward. The station area is quieter than major transit hubs, serving local residential neighborhoods with minimal commercial development.
GOTOKUJI: THE LUCKY CAT TEMPLE
Gotokuji is the temple famous for maneki-neko (lucky cat figurines). The temple grounds have hundreds of cat statues left as offerings—it's become a tourist spot for people interested in the lucky cat connection, though it functions as a regular Buddhist temple for local residents.
The area around Gotokuji is residential, with the temple sitting in a quiet neighborhood rather than a tourist district.
YAMASHITA & KYODO
Yamashita Station is another small stop on the Setagaya Line. The walk passes through more residential streets connecting to Kyodo.
Kyodo Station sits on the Odakyu Line, a major commuter line, making it busier than the smaller Setagaya Line stops. The area around Kyodo has more commercial development—shopping streets, restaurants, bars that serve commuters and residents. By the time the walk reaches Kyodo, it's evening, so you'll see the area as it transitions to nighttime activity.
AFTERNOON TO EVENING
This walk was filmed in March starting in the afternoon and continuing into evening. The light changes over 3.5 hours—afternoon sun in the early sections around Todoroki and Fukasawa, then gradually dimming as the walk progresses north, reaching Kyodo as evening begins.
March weather in Tokyo is mild, so the walk shows the city in comfortable conditions before the heat of summer or the cold of winter.
WHY WALK SETAGAYA
Setagaya Ward isn't a tourist destination despite having 900,000+ residents. It's residential Tokyo at the largest scale—entire neighborhoods of houses and apartments, local shopping streets, schools, parks, the infrastructure of living rather than visiting.
If you're interested in seeing where a significant portion of Tokyo's population actually lives, or you want to understand what "residential Tokyo" means at ward scale, Setagaya shows you that. The walk covers diverse parts of the ward: upscale residential Fukasawa, standard residential neighborhoods around smaller stations, and the busier commercial area around Kyodo.
The 3.5 hours shows the geographic and temporal range—south to north across the ward, afternoon to evening across time.
