The indie board game industry is in crisis—and this time, it’s not about delays or shipping containers. It’s tariffs. Specifically, a massive 54% tariff on imported board games and components that threatens to crush small publishers like myself.
In this video, I’m speaking honestly and openly about what this new tariff means for my small business, the game I just launched on Kickstarter, and the future of indie board game publishing in general. If you're a board game enthusiast, Kickstarter backer, aspiring designer, or someone who cares about small creators, this issue matters more than you might realize.
When I set out to publish my game, I knew there would be challenges—manufacturing costs, logistics, marketing, fulfillment headaches—but no one plans for a 54% tariff to be dropped on their production budget after everything’s already in motion. These tariffs weren’t in place when I got quotes, funded the campaign, or opened late pledges. But now, they’re here—and they could mean the difference between breaking even or going deep into the red.
For large publishers, a 54% increase can be absorbed across multiple product lines or offset by volume. But for indie designers and small publishers, that kind of increase is potentially devastating. It doesn’t just affect profit—it affects whether the game gets made at all, whether stretch goals get fulfilled, whether the creator can make a second game. This isn’t just about one project—it’s about the future of independent creativity in the board game space.
I’ve poured my heart and soul into this project. My game, Dice Fights, is a two-player engine-building dice battler packed with character, class combos, and strategy. It recently funded on Kickstarter (thank you!), and right now late pledges are open on Gamefound. I’m still committed to fulfilling every promise I’ve made to backers and late-pledgers—but these tariffs have forced me to re-evaluate costs, timelines, and risks.
If you're someone who loves supporting indie games, if you’ve ever dreamed of launching your own Kickstarter, or if you care about how global trade policies affect real creators—you’ll want to hear what I have to say in this video. This is bigger than one game or one publisher. This is about the sustainability of passion-driven game design in a market increasingly dominated by corporate logistics and unpredictable fees.
