King Frederick II of Prussia (1712–1786)—commonly known as Frederick the Great—was one of Europe’s most influential Enlightenment-era monarchs and a master military commander. Ascending the throne in 1740, he transformed Prussia from a secondary power into a major European state through discipline, efficient administration, and bold warfare.

Frederick is best remembered for his victories in the Silesian Wars and his leadership during the Seven Years’ War, where his tactical brilliance and iron resolve preserved Prussia against overwhelming coalitions. Beyond the battlefield, he was a patron of philosophy, music, and the arts, corresponding with thinkers like Voltaire and promoting religious tolerance and legal reform.

An “enlightened absolutist,” Frederick ruled with centralized authority but sought to govern rationally, improving education, codifying laws, and strengthening the civil service. His reign left Prussia powerful, disciplined, and respected—laying the foundations for the later unification of Germany.
