New R&D and Development Sites: Tokyo Electron has established a new development site in Bengaluru, which will focus on software development, equipment design, and simulation. This is in addition to new offices planned for Dholera, Gujarat, and Assam to directly support Tata Electronics' upcoming fabrication (fab) and assembly and test units. The Dholera office is expected to house 200-300 engineers, along with training facilities and a warehouse for critical parts.

Initially, the focus will be on software, AI, and robotics applications for its equipment, with the possibility of local manufacturing at a later stage once a solid engineering base is established. Academic Partnerships: To further bolster the talent pool, Tokyo Electron is expanding its partnerships with Indian universities and academic institutions beyond existing collaborations with IIT Bombay and IIT Chennai. This will include joint research on next-generation semiconductor technologies and will help in building a skilled workforce for the industry.

Strengthening Local Ecosystem: The new offices and R&D centers are a crucial step towards building a robust local ecosystem. By providing on-ground engineering support, training, and a supply of key parts, TEL is ensuring that India's new semiconductor fabs and test facilities have the necessary support to operate efficiently.

This strategic expansion by Tokyo Electron is a direct response to India's "Make in India" and "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" initiatives and its ambitious push to become a global semiconductor hub. The government's policies and incentives under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) have been instrumental in attracting global players.

The announcement comes on the heels of a visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Tokyo Electron factory in Japan, where he emphasized the "complementarity between India's growing semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem and Japan's strengths in advanced semiconductor equipment and technology."
