Members of The International Football Association Board (IFAB) agreed on Saturday (1st March) to a change to football from next season, in an attempt to combat time wasting by goalkeepers.
IFAB members agreed that in the event that a goalkeeper holds the ball for longer than eight seconds, a corner will be awarded to the opposing team.
Referees will count down with their hands for the final five seconds of the eight to signal to goalkeepers how much they have remaining to distribute the ball.
The current rule states that an indirect free-kick should be given in this situation, although the infringement rarely results in a free-kick being awarded.
Members of IFAB were speaking the media at the 139th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of The IFAB in Belfast on Saturday afternoon.
