Accidents must be reported immediately to the Commissioner of Police, the District Magistrate, and the appointed inspector under the act. Failure to comply with the act's provisions, rules, license conditions, or directions from the Chief Inspector can result in penalties, including fines up to Rs. 5000/- and additional fines for continuing contravention.

To ensure the safe operation of lifts and escalators, the act prescribes various safety measures. These include using materials conforming to Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) specifications and the National Building Code, periodic inspections by authorized inspectors, dedicated lift wells, proper projections for openings, passenger capacity and load notifications, emergency bells and lights, adequate lift pit depth, compliance with gravity stopping distance, provision of locking devices, and adherence to safety gear requirements.
