Former President Donald J. Trump appeared at a campaign rally in Wilmington, N.C., on Saturday, two days after CNN reported that the Republican nominee for governor in the state, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, had called himself a “black NAZI” and defended slavery on a pornographic forum.

Mr. Trump has endorsed Mr. Robinson and previously praised him as “Martin Luther King on steroids.” But Mr. Robinson did not appear at the rally on Saturday.

Vice President Kamala Harris said on Saturday that she had accepted an invitation from CNN to participate in a second presidential debate next month, and urged Mr. Trump to join her. Mr. Trump declined, saying it was “too late.”

The contest between Mr. Trump and Ms. Harris remains tight, according to a new poll from The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer and Siena College. The poll, conducted the week after Mr. Trump and Ms. Harris debated, found them tied nationally at 47 percent each, and Ms. Harris leading by four points in the crucial state of Pennsylvania.
