Violence and other abuses by police and soldiers during the Covid-19 lockdown in South Africa have provoked considerable concern. But what are the factors feeding into these abuses of power and what do they tell us about the police, and other security forces, in South Africa? And what do they reveal to us about our political leadership and governing institutions? Do they have implications for the future of democracy in South Africa? This webinar will aim to provide answers to these questions.

David Bruce is an independent researcher specialising in crime, policing, and public security. He has written extensively on police violence in South Africa over the last 20 years. During 2016-2018 he was a member of the panel of experts appointed by the Minister of Police on the recommendations of the Marikana Commission of Inquiry. He mainly works with organisations in South African civil society and is a visiting research fellow at the School of Governance at Wits University.
