How To Get Your Car Ready For a Smog Check – Pass 100% Of The Time – I/M Drive Cycle Ready

In this video, I show you how to prepare your car for a smog test via the drive cycle. Smog laws where changed in 2013 to take advantage of the OBD2 system in cars 1996 and up. Since then, the way the smog check is done has changed compared to pre-2013. I show you what needs to be done so you can pass your smog check on the first try. *NOTE - The OBD2 system is only read for cars that are 2000 and newer. If you have an OBD2 car from 1996-1999, smog stations still do the "sniffer test" on your car. Basically, for those year cars, they still do the smog check the old way and this video isn't relevant to your particular car.

0:00 – general information about smog and how to check your inspection monitor (I/M) status
2:54 - Idle for 2 ½ mins with AC on - oxygen sensor heater self test, air injection system passive air test, EVAP purge test and misfire detection test are done during this period
3:40 - Get on freeway and accelerate to 55mph - misfire detection test, fuel trim test and EVAP purge test are done during this period
4:25 – Hold 55mph for 3 mins - diagnostics will be performed on O2 response, air intrusive system, EGR flow, purge valve, misfire detection and fuel trim
4:51 - Coast to 20mph - EGR flow test, purge valve test and fuel trim test are done during this period
5:21 - Accelerate back up to 55mph for 5 mins - catalyst monitor diagnostics will be done during this period
