(10 Jul 2019) The chief of staff to Vice President Mike Pence defended Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta Wednesday amid growing calls for his resignation.
A number of Democratic lawmakers and presidential candidates have called for Acosta, a former federal prosecutor in South Florida, to resign or be fired for his role in a secret 2008 plea deal that let billionaire Jeffrey Epstein avoid federal prosecution after allegations he molested teenage girls.
Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Marc Short said the "reality is that the defense attorneys in that case actually tried to get Alex removed because they thought he was such an aggressive prosecutor in this case," and added that Acosta will be "sharing more information" in the coming days.
Epstein is now charged with child sex trafficking and has pleaded not guilty.
Federal prosecutors in New York accuse him of abusing dozens of underage girls in the early 2000s, paying them hundreds of dollars in cash for massages and then molesting them at his homes in Florida and New York. He could face up to 45 years in prison if convicted.
Short also responded to the resignation of Britain's ambassador to the U.S., Kim Darroch, who said he could no longer carry out his role days after diplomatic cables were leaked revealing Darroch criticizing President Donald Trump.
Short said "the reality was that in light of the last few days, his ability to be effective was probably limited so it was probably the right course."
