Bayaan Movie Review by Sucharita Tyagi - Huma Qureshi plays Roohi with a great mix of naivety and bullheadedness. Her self-assurance becomes her strength and her foil at the same time. The actor does a balanced job of allowing Roohi to fall into the “I will fix this” trap, without turning
toward stereotypical tropes. The officer says passionate things like “arrest toh main
kar ke rahoongi”, but also allows the fear of being lynched cross her face with just as
much ease.

But like Roohi’s internal arc, Bayaan tends to get patchy, occasionally tripping on
clunky dialogue and rushed writing with not enough delivery on the promise of the
absolutely gutting atmospheric thriller that first sequence promised it would be.

Watching Bayaan as the news of alleged murders pours out of Dharamsthala in
Karnataka makes the end slate feel more poignant. Short of naming names, Bikas
asserts again via text that holy fathers keep getting paroles, even as lives are lost. Its
no wonder we keep getting films and shows on exploitative self-styled gurus-
Siddharth Malhotra’s Maharaj, Prakash Jha’s Ashram, Apoorv Singh Karki’s Sirf Ek
Banda Kaafi Hai, Wild Wild Country. Perhaps in this economy, starting a cult just
makes sense.

Bayaan is a 2025 Hindi police procedural, drama film written and directed by Bikas Ranjan Mishra. Starring Huma Qureshi, the film centers on Roohi, a female detective investigating her first case of a prominent cult leader, facing anonymous accusations of sexual abuse, confronts institutional power and reluctant witnesses.

The film is selected in the Discovery section of the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival and had its World premiere on 6 September 2025
