ARCHITECT ARTIST DRAWING WITH XP PEN MAGIC DRAWING TABLET

STROMNESS USING XPPEN MAGIC DRAWING Pad and the SKETCHBOOK APP XP

I unboxed this 12.2” Android 12 Tablet for artists earlier this week, this is my first real drawing using it and my first foray into Android.

This is Stromness in Orkney and it’s a scene with the Stromness Museum in the foreground looking North and back to the harbour. It’s a scene I now know well having just returned from sketching workshops in Sanday, Stronsay and Westray.

I do like to draw digitally as well as traditionally so this tablet will be a really interesting way to investigate that in more detail. I do a lot of digital drawing using my iPhone, iPad, Wacom pens, digital display tablets, pen tablets and hybrid tablets like the Wacom Slate. I enjoy working digitally whilst mobile sketching, designing or overmarking and I think this will add an extra dimension to my digital creativity.

I was interested in this tablet as it comes complete with the pen and other items such as the case which make it economic whilst having a large screen.

So far the whole appearance and build quality feels great. You will see that my digital drawing style is very like my analogue approach, and that the tablet, pen and app supported that. The app records Timelapse and is multi platform and I have used it in Windows and iOS but they are all slightly different so there is a wee bit of a learning process needed.

The pen and cursor are aligned very well, the pen is very sensitive and the screen looks and feels great when you are drawing on it. You will see that my lines align well particularly when I zoom in to add more detail etc. the pen comes with a plastic nib installed, it comes with replacement plastic nibs and also felt nibs which I have yet to try but I imagine will further add to the drawing experience.

The bottom line is I am really enjoying it and I think it will add to my productivity and creativity whilst mobile.
