After twenty-five years of silence, Dusty Wilder returned to the studio with a pocket notebook full of bad dreams, bar receipts, and one song he swore was “the national anthem of a world gone tone-deaf.”
That song was “Epidemic of the Screaming Babies.”

Recorded live-to-tape in a borrowed East Nashville church basement, the track captures Wilder at his most unfiltered—half prophet, half barroom comedian—strumming a beat-up Gibson J-45 while muttering about a planet where everyone’s talkin’ and nobody’s listenin’.
The band sounds like they learned the tune on the walk to the mic: brushed snare, pedal-steel sighs, a Hammond wheeze that comes in late but stays too long.

Critics at the time called it “equal parts Dylan meltdown and honky-tonk sermon.”
Fans just called it “Dusty, finally losing it.”

The single never charted, but bootleg CDs from his brief 2004 tour became cult favorites—especially after Wilder vanished again the following year, leaving only a motel key from Tucumcari and a half-finished lyric sheet that read:

“If the world’s a nursery, I’m ready for recess.”

Now, for the first time since its original pressing, Pure Snark Records – Nashville Division proudly re-issues “Epidemic of the Screaming Babies”—remastered from the original reels, crackle and all.
It’s equal parts social commentary, midlife crisis, and hillbilly Zen.
