This year marks the 30th anniversary of the end of Martial Law in Taiwan, which was imposed on May 19, 1949 and lifted on July 15, 1987, lasting a total of 38 years and 57 days. During this period, commonly known as the White Terror Era, about 140,000 Taiwanese were imprisoned, of whom 3,000-4,000 were executed, according to one study. These individuals were suspected of opposing the Kuomintang government led by Chiang Kai-shek. As a result, his security forces rounded up people with real or perceived anti-government views. This year, the Preparatory Office of the National Human Rights Museum organized a special exhibition at a museum in Taipei’s Jingmei district. Take a look inside the former prison where many of the victims of this period were locked up and see how far democracy has come in Taiwan.
