Exhibit introduces Martial Law in Taiwan

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the end of Martial Law in Taiwan, which was imposed on May 19, 1949 and lifted on July 15, 1987, lasting a total of 38 years and 57 days. During this period, commonly known as the White Terror Era, about 140,000 Taiwanese were imprisoned, of whom 3,000-4,000 were executed, according to one study. These individuals were suspected of opposing the Kuomintang government led by Chiang Kai-shek. As a result, his security forces rounded up people with real or perceived anti-government views. This year, the Preparatory Office of the National Human Rights Museum organized a special exhibition at a museum in Taipei’s Jingmei district.
