Bulgaria officially adopted the euro on January 1, becoming the 21st member of the eurozone as celebrations erupted across the capital Sofia. Fireworks lit up the sky outside the Bulgarian Central Bank as crowds cheered the historic currency switch, marking a major milestone in the country’s European integration.

A countdown on the central bank’s facade welcomed the new year alongside images of Bulgarian euro coins and the European Union flag. Many citizens expressed optimism, calling the move the final step toward full EU integration, while businesses prepared to accept both the old lev and the euro during the transition.

Despite opposition from nearly half of the electorate, Bulgaria’s euro adoption reshapes the economic map of the European Union, leaving only a few EU members outside the common currency bloc amid growing euroscepticism in parts of Europe.
