At the age of 15, Tallulah won a magazine contest and the grand prize was a minor role in a film in New York. Although not much came of the film role, Tallulah loved the lifestyle she began living in the city. She was given a role in a theatrical play due to her father’s connections, and this made the young woman realize that the stage was her true passion. However, she also began growing extremely fond of mind-altering substances, such as marijuana and cocaine.

After several years performing to middling success on the New York theater scene, Tallulah was offered a role on stage in London that she couldn’t turn down. She made her London debut in 1923’s The Dancers, leading to a period of unprecedented success that made the young star an honorary English icon. In 1930, Tallulah returned to American to work with Paramount Studios in Hollywood.

Tallulah didn’t find much success with Paramount Studios, and decided that she wanted to return to stage. She went to New York, where she began experiencing medical problems. She was diagnosed with a life-threatening case of gonorrhea, forcing her to undergo an emergency hysterectomy. The pain of the recovery ushered Tallulah deeper down the path of substance abuse. Tallulah subsequently returned to London, and then came back to Hollywood, acting in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1944 thriller Lifeboat.
