This is my 1960's Seafix radio direction finder, made by Electronics Laboratories in England. I have several variations of this RDF... the Seabeam and the Seafix2, with minor variations. Some have broadcast band, some only beacon. Their beacon is between 200 and 400 Khz. Most of the ones I have seen have rechargeable batteries (long gone bad in all cases), but one unit has a battery box for 4 AA's.

The compass is a high quality Sestral bearing compass, which is suitable for taking visual bearings for piloting... in addition to showing the direction to the beacon antennas.

In this video you will note that there is not much difference between the null and the full signal strength. I think this is because I was so near the beacon... the signal strength was just too strong, and all around me. But there is a bit of a difference. However I was not about to roam around the back areas of the airport with an odd looking device such as this... I realized afterwards that going up there might have been a problem as it was... and would not recommend it.
