STORYLINE:
British singer Ed Sheeran continued to sing before a New York jury, hoping to hit the right notes as his copyright trial entered a second week.

Sheeran took the stand Monday, as a jury decides whether his song “Thinking Out Loud” violates the copyrights of Marvin Gaye's soul classic “Let's Get It On.”

Sheeran says he's getting encouragement from other performers who also worry that they'll be sued.

He didn't identify any of them but said they're cheering him on — grateful that he's standing up against what all songwriters view as a threat to their work.

“When you write songs, somebody comes after you,” Sheeran said.

The British singer offered a spirited defense and a lot of singing on Monday as he continued testifying at a trial at which he is accused of infringing the copyrights of the 1973 soul classic Gaye created with fellow songwriter Ed Townsend.

The trial stems from a lawsuit filed by Townsend's heirs.

Townsend’s daughter Kathryn Griffin Townsend, earlier Monday, told reporters she is hoping for “victory.”

When asked what that meant, she said it would mean: “that intellectual property now will be respected. And that doing the right thing is always the best.”

“I'm confident that God has got this. Whichever way it goes, I know that this statement will ring across the world,” she added.
