Battletech: The Model 96 “Elephant” DropShip (The Mechwarrior Dropship Guide)

The Model 96 Tug, also known as the Elephant, was a Star League heavy tug DropShip used for moving large craft around orbital shipyards, with a secondary role as an assault DropShip in support of invasion task forces.
During the buildup of the Star League Navy, a heavy tug class DropShip was needed to help with their growing fleet of WarShips. The SLDF Navy Department of Procurement issued a request for bids to design a new DropShip. The requirements included that not only would it help dock WarShips, but the DropShip would also be used in a support role as an assault DropShip. A designation that had a slightly different meaning at the time.
Only the design by Ni-ma-kachi Fusion Products Ltd. fulfilled the requirements, and production was started in May of 2652.
At the time, the Elephant was the largest Tug-class DropShip ever built. The ship was built around massive PlasmaStar Interplanetary Drives capable of an astounding 4Gs of thrust. This would enable the new DropShip to maneuver the largest of WarShips in the SLDF Navy. The ship was designed with a reinforced bow—a rounded triangle shape that would allow it to mate up most WarShip hulls. At each point there is a retractable arm with a powerful magnetic locking device attached for securing to the ship. From the front, the design gave the appearance of an elephant’s head, earning the ship its nickname. The ship was covered with nearly 77 tons of ferro-fibrous armor and armed with enough firepower—including bays for a reduced combined arms battalion—to classify it as an assault ship.

Just over a hundred of the Model 96’s were constructed. The “Elephant” saw service throughout the Inner Sphere and was attached to several naval fleets and installations, including major yards like Terra’s O’Neil Yards. During the Amaris Coup of 2766, fifty Elephants helped defend Terran shipyards orbiting Titan, Mars and Venus. Two squadrons of the SLDF's 23rd Wing ("The Little Beavers") fought against Rim Worlds Republic forces in the opening days of the conflict, destroying one of the Republic's Dart class light cruisers, the RWRS Conquistador, above Mars before being destroyed themselves.


During the Succession Wars, ComStar produced a limited number of these ships between 2882 and 2994. These newly built Elephants were deployed to ComStar's secret fleet bases in the Ross 248 and Luyten 68-28 star systems assisting its Faslane Yardships.
Several of these vessels defected to the newly formed Word of Blake splinter faction in 3052 during the ComStar Schism. In the years following the Schism, the Word of Blake navy expanded, requiring the production of more Model 96s to meet their needs.

All-important classes will be introduced and their features (aerodyne/ spheroid, Docking Collar, KFFC Boom, Mech Bay, fighter cubicle, …) explained. You will see, that in the BattleTech universe, BattleMechs are not the pinnacle of technology.
